Reading / Research / Judgment

The claim should bear examination.

A working method for a body of writing concerned with truth, character, and service. The standard is not how impressive an idea sounds, but how carefully it is understood and responsibly used.

01

Begin with a real question

Reading becomes useful when it meets a question someone actually needs to answer. Define the situation, the audience, the decision, and the limits before collecting more material. An impressive bibliography cannot substitute for a clear purpose.

02

Keep the source attached

An exact quotation needs an identifiable work, edition or translation, and page or section. A paraphrase should be called a paraphrase. When a claim cannot be established, narrow it, investigate it, or leave it out. A memorable sentence does not earn an exemption.

03

Distinguish the kinds of material

Personal recollection, documented fact, historical interpretation, fictional illustration, and new editorial synthesis do different jobs. Their status should remain visible. A developing manuscript is not a released book; a proposed program is not an accomplished result.

04

Make room for a counterargument

A useful interpretation can survive being questioned. Ask what the strongest opposing account explains, what costs your preferred view neglects, and which evidence could change the conclusion. Admiration for a thinker or historical figure need not erase their limits.

05

Keep human responsibility in the process

AI can assist organization, comparison, and drafting. It cannot establish that a memory occurred, a quotation is authentic, a permission exists, or a judgment is sound. The person publishing or acting remains responsible for checking the result.

06

Return after the action

The movement from idea to conduct is a test. Keep a small record of what was tried, what happened, who was affected, and what needs changing. Revision should make the work more accurate and useful—not merely more elaborate.

If you find a factual error, a quotation problem, or a passage that needs clearer context, send the page, the claim, and the evidence you think should be considered. Corrections are part of taking a reader seriously.
